Western Wear Stamps

This stamp issue celebrates the lasting appeal of Western wear with four playful Forever stamps. Inspired by the clothing and gear once worn by working ranchers and reimagined in a fun, imaginative style, these familiar items represent a distinctly American fashion tradition.

The booklet of 20 stamps includes four designs featuring classic Western staples: a cowboy hat, a cowboy boot with a spur, a Western shirt, and a belt buckle with a longhorn head. The illustrations use a stippling technique, built from small dots of color, to create a textured, weathered look. Each design is bordered by imagery closely tied to the American West, including cacti, snakes, roses, and stars.

The story of Western wear in the United States traces back to the earliest cowboys. In the 16th century, the Spanish brought horses and cattle to Mexico and later established ranches in areas that would become Texas, Arizona, and California by the early 1700s. The vaqueros who managed cattle wore practical clothing designed to protect them from harsh weather and rugged surroundings. Items such as cowboy boots, wide-brimmed hats, and shirts with reinforced yokes gradually became closely linked to the image of the American cowboy and cowgirl.

For well over a century, the romance and symbolism of cowboy culture, spread through Wild West shows, rodeos, dime novels, Western films, and country music, has continued to shape American fashion and evolve with changing trends.

The stamps were designed by art director Greg Breeding using original artwork by Ryan Feerer.

Western Wear stamps are issued as Forever stamps, meaning they remain valid for the current one-ounce First-Class Mail postage rate.
